Initial or Monogram

Monogram cufflinks can be engraved with two initials or a three-letter traditional monogram. Two initials, first and last, is the simpler format. The letters sit side by side, equal in weight. Three letters follow the traditional monogram arrangement: the surname initial is set largest at the center, flanked by the given name and middle initial, smaller, on either side. This is the format found on formal silverware, stationery, and signet rings. The distinction is not decorative. It is a convention with a history. Kai will advise on which format suits the brief. See the full engraving options to configure the right letterform for your initials.

Where the Engraving Appears

Face engraving is cut into the visible front of the cufflink. Reverse engraving is placed on the back of the face, a private mark, visible only when the cufflink is removed. Both are available. For weddings, a date engraved on the reverse alongside initials on the face is a common combination. Kai confirms placement before production begins. In either position, the engraving is cut into the silver surface, not surface-marked. That distinction determines whether the mark holds its definition for decades.

Letterforms at 18mm

Not all typefaces hold at 18mm. Fine serifs and hairline strokes that read well on paper become indistinct when cut into silver at cufflink scale. Kai has assessed enough engraving briefs to know which letterforms engrave cleanly and which do not. If a requested style will not produce a legible result, Kai flags it before production begins. The brief specifies the initial format and preferred style. Kai provides a digital proof for approval before any engraving starts. For those interested in a family crest, the same assessment applies: Kai reviews the artwork before committing to production.

Common Questions

What is the difference between initials and a monogram?
Initials are two or more letters presented in equal size, typically first and last name. A monogram is a traditional arrangement where the surname initial is set larger at the center, with the given name and middle initial smaller on either side. ZAUNICK offers both formats.

Which initial goes in the center of a three-letter monogram?
The surname initial is placed at the center and set larger. For a man named James Edward Hart, the monogram arrangement is J H E, with H at center. This is the standard convention for a traditional three-letter monogram.

Can I use a custom font for my monogram?
A specific style can be requested. Kai assesses every brief and advises on which letterforms will engrave cleanly at cufflink scale. If a requested typeface will not produce a legible result at 18mm, Kai will suggest alternatives and provide a digital proof for approval.

How do I submit my monogram brief?
Use the contact form. Include your initials, the format you prefer (two initials or three-letter monogram), any notes on style, and your event date if applicable. Kai reviews every enquiry personally before the order is confirmed.
